First Time Out of California
<---- 13 ---->

supersize this pic

This is the first time this car has been out of California and it's running like a dream. Finally out of Sacamento, I'm cruising at 80 without a hiccup. My only problem is lots of construction on I-80 going through the Tahoe National Forest.

Like 4,311 other '73 GTOs, mine is based on the Lemans Sport Coupe (as was Mark's). The other 494 cars that year were simply Lemans Coupes. Some specifications and options on my car:

  • 208 inches long, 77 inches wide
  • 400 CID with 4-bbl carb 230 net HP
  • 3-speed TH400 automatic transmission
  • Honeycomb wheel option
  • Air conditioning; Bucket seats
  • Optional accent stripe; Power windows
  • AM/FM push-button stereo
  • No tilt steering; no cruise control

To the left: This vista is typical of what I drove through in this segment, but the better stuff I could not capture since there was no place to pull over and I'd need a "fisheye" lens to take it all in.

73 facts about 1973
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigns after pleading "no contest" to charges of federal income tax evasion on income taxes on $29,500 in 1967. He was the governor of Maryland at the time. He is fined $10,000 and put on three years' probation. He is succeeded by congressman Gerald Ford.

73 facts about the GTO
The Hurst Corporation had a strong relationship with Pontiac and the GTO. Hurst shifters were standard equipment and later, Hurst headers and Hurst wheels were part of the options that one could get on a GTO. Hurst did a lot of cross--marketing with Pontiac--showing their new shifter "with a GTO built around it."
