October 6, 2001: Larry and I took off from Los Angeles at 8:00 AM. It's 65 degrees. Cruising up I-5, it's a about a seven-hour drive, but Larry makes it in six with two pit stops and this 20-minute layover at "Pyramid Lake" next to the freeway.
Oldies music and college football are on the radio. I'm browsing Old Car Trader magazine for good measure. I told Larry this could only be better if he was a blonde with big boobs.

To the left: A stop a Pyramid Lake. It's a great day to buy an old car.

73 facts about 1973
John Matuszak, defensive end, was the first NFL player drafted this year. Born in Milwaukee, WI, John was an "unpredictable" character who liked to mix painkillers and alcohol. He played for Houston, Kansas City and Oakland, where he helped the Raiders win two super bowls. He retired in 1982, but began acting a few years before. His most notable performance was in the 1979 movie "North Dallas Forty." He died in 1989.

73 facts about the GTO
There were three songs dedicated to the GTO in 1964-65:
  • "GTO" by Ronny and the Daytonas
  • "My Mighty GTO" by Jan and Dean
  • "GeeTO Tiger" by The Tigers

"GTO" by Ronny and the Daytonas was their signature song. It sold 1.25 million copies. The flip side of the 45 was "Hot Rod Baby." Originally, marketing man Jim Wangers approached the Beach Boys for the song, but they wanted too much up front to do it.

"My Mighty GTO" by Jan and Dean was on the flip side of the single "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena". It also sold well.

"GeeTO Tiger" was created and promoted by Pontiac. It sold over 250,000 copies though the mail. The flip side was "Big sounds of the GeeTO Tiger" which depicted a GTO racing at the GM proving grounds. Lots of zooming the vrooming on that side.
