facts about the GTO
The "Endura" bumper on the 1968 GTO was more than a styling innovation--it could withstand considerable impacts without any damage. It was actually a synthetic ABS plastic urethane that could "rebound" to its original shape after a significant impact. Coupled with those new hidden headlights, it made for a dramatic front end. What does it look like? John Delorean himself smacked it with a sledgehammer in one commercial, while Pontiac TV pitchman Paul Richards walloped it repeatedly with an iron crowbar in another. In its own test, Motor Trend dropped a bowling ball on it and found no damage whatsoever. It was also fire-retardant, heat-resistant, imprenatrable by oils, gasoline, salt, sunlight and acids. It was a GTO staple all the way through 1972--until the Feds came in with new rules about 5 mph front impact bumpers in 1973. |
