This is a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado. It had a 425 CID engine that generated 385 HP. Remember, this was not an "intermediate" GM car, so the 400+ CID ban did not apply to this luxurious front-wheel driving monster.

To the left: I looked inside this baby and it's full of comfort and gadgetry of its day. No more Olds today probably means a "mint" one like this takes on even more value.

73 facts about the GTO
The GTO may have started the muscle car craze, but the competition did not sit still for long--including the other GM divisions. The GTO's biggest competitors emerged right under the GM banner.

The most serious early sibling competitor was a SS 396 Chevelle in 1966. The Olds 442 combined brute power with luxury and got around the GM 400 CID ban in 1968 by producing a joint car with Hurst that had a 455 engine. 442 owners boasted that "GTO" actually stood for "Go To Olds."

Buick's muscle car route was a bit slower than it's GM counterparts, but the evolution of the Skylark GS (Gran Sport) eventually became the insane grand champion of pure power within the GM line. The Skylark GS in 1970 could be had with a "Stage 1" 455 V8 with 360 hp. Informed observers maintain it was the fastest production car to ever come from GM. The literature indicates that, like many cars back then, this published horsepower was "grossly underrated."
