Phil and his wife Brooke put me up for the night in Sparks, right outside of Reno. Phil is an excellent guy who happens to collect 60s and 70s memorabilia and drives a 1972 Corvette--my kind of guy! To the left: Here's Phil and me with our cars right before I head out across Nevada. I got to drive the Vette--it's kick-ass! |

facts about the GTO
During the GTO's salad days (65--67) the primary advertising theme for the GTO was the "Tiger." It was tiger this and tiger that. It worked--too well in fact. The ever-conservative GM brass, concerned about its image being to vicious and unfavorable, killed the Tiger theme at the end of 1967. As recalled by John Delorean: "The ads featured Barabra Feldon, later of TV's Get Smart, growling like a tigress as she extolled the virtues of Pontiac from a tigerskin rug. The dealers liked the campaign--Ed Rollet, my boss at the time, called me after a call from [then GM Chairman] Jim Roche. Ed called me at home one night and said, 'John, get that goddamn tiger out of your ads.'" So ended the Tiger campaign. Pontiac followed with "The Great One" and in 1970 "The Humbler"--but even that irked the GM brass as being too controversial. What a bunch of candy-asses. |
