THE GREEN MACHINE MONOGRAM GARBAGE TRUCK KIT BASH EIGHTH PLACE WINNER IN THE 1968 MONOGRAM / CAR MODEL MAGAZINE GARBAGE TRUCK CONTEST!

The 1968 Monogram/Car Model Magazine Contest was the motivation for this custom pick up truck. These are new photos of the original model. This was the first model magazine contest that I had entered. Results were in the Feb. 1969 issue of "Car Model".

The "The Big Green Flower Machine" graphics were inspired by an old Simon & Garfunkel song from 1966. Click here to listen to "The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine." (high-speed connection suggested for .mp3 format)

This project included parts from the Monogram Garbage Truck, AMT's '53 Ford Pickup, Cobra, Cyclone, Silhouette, Ala Kart and IMC's Volkswagen and Little Red Wagon Kits. Here's some of the details:

The top was raised about an inch with sheet plastic. The front end from the Cobra kit was grafted onto the front of the Garbage Truck. The pick up bed is a modified piece from the '53 Ford truck. The rear fenders were cut off the ALA Kart unit and modified to fit.

The frame uses parts from the Little Red Wagon and the engine is from the IMC Volkswagen kit. The Volkswagen engine was hooked up to a drive shaft for rear wheel drive.

The side pipes are from the Silhouette kit. The pick up bed, floor board and running boards are covered with self adhesive flannel. This flannel product is now available from the Contact Corp in at least a couple of colors.

The frame and engine were painted with model railroad paints. Most of the chrome parts were sprayed with a clear pearl which gave them a nice satin finish. The finish is Metal flake Candy Green fogged with Aztec Gold and Yellow Pearl.
